How did University Of Mississppi get its nickname Ole Miss?

The Univ. of Mississippi was nicknamed ‘Ole Miss’  after the Civil War when former slaves gave the school this name in reference to the plantation owner’s wife  (Ole) and the state of Mississippi (Miss).

University Mascot
Rebel Mascot JIm Ivey

The origin came from a man named ‘Blind Jim’ Ivy. Ivy was a campus idol and was known as the ‘dean of freshmen’ and would give many pep talks to the freshmen class at Ole Miss. He was born as the son of a former slave and was blinded while working with hot tar on Tallahatchie River Bridge.  After his death in 1955 the colonel rebel mascot was to serve as a reminder of his life.
